STORM ALERT: TROPICAL STORM IDA

More of the Same

Posted by ns62590 on February 29, 2008

As it has seemed with so many storms we’ve had this winter, precip type is a big deal. We can’t just have one storm with all rain, or all snow. Today’s system will sound just the same. Snow has already begun falling and will continue into early afternoon, then possibly change to a period of rain or a mix of rain/snow for a short time. The precip will end before starting again tonight. 1 to 3 inches are expected before the changeover and another inch or so is expected overnight.

Now for the problem….again! Models are very inconsistent about a storm for Monday and Tuesday. They agree on timing, beginning precip Monday evening, going all through Tuesday. It’s the type of precip they disagree on. The GFS model shows rain then snow then a mix then rain again, all in a 12 hour period, so I’m hesitant to make any predictions at this time. So the only think I’m going to say is that we will see something on Monday and Tuesday. The one thing I can promise is that Monday afternoon, we will see highs in the 50s. When was the last time I said that!?

Keep checking back for updates on the Monday/Tuesday situation and until later, have a good day. TGIF!

I think We Can Handle This

Posted by ns62590 on February 29, 2008

After what we’ve put up with in the past few weeks, I think we can put up with the storm that will be affecting our area on Friday. We should see the snow begin to spread over the area Friday morning, with a storm total of 1 to 3 inches. The snow may mix with or change to rain for a short time Friday afternoon, before tapering to snow flurries or scattered snow showers into Saturday. It will not be an all day event, but off and on precip is expected. Enjoy your Friday everyone, and be careful out there if it gets a little sloppy.

Not Another One!

Posted by ns62590 on February 28, 2008

Yes, I’m sorry to say, but another winter storm is approaching. This will be nothing like the storm we saw this week, but we could see another couple inches during the day on Friday. However, it appears that temperatures will warm enough to possibly see a little rain mixing with the snow at times Friday afternoon. Nonetheless, an additional 2 to 3 inches of snow can be expected on Friday. Some places, if we get less rain, may see up to 4 inches, but that appears unlikely at this time.

As for your Thursday, some sun may actually shine, with temperatures near 20 degrees. The clouds move in overnight ahead of the approaching clipper low from the plains. Have a good day!

Still Snowing

Posted by ns62590 on February 27, 2008

As if we haven’t seen a lot of snow recently, expect more scattered snow showers this evening and overnight, but no more than an inch to locally two in spots can be expected. The bigger story will be the temperatures will be around 9 with wind chills at or just below zero.

Tomorrow should stay dry, at least for the morning and afternoon. Our next storm comes in Thursday night and will last through Friday. It doesn’t look like a huge snowfall, but we could see another couple of inches. There may be a period of rain throughout the afternoon, but will change back to snow showers or flurries into Saturday morning.

If you’re tired of the snow, Monday will be right up your alley! Temperatures could get into the 50s, but after the front passes Monday night, the snow flurries and showers would come back again. But until we get there, we have to get through the weekend. Have a good night everyone!

Scattered Snow Showers Today

Posted by ns62590 on February 27, 2008

Most of the area had snow totals of 7 to 8 inches from the storm yesterday. Still today, expect scattered snow showers, but accumulations will be only 1 to locally 3 inches where snowbands persist. The snowbelt counties of Trumbull and Portage and points northward remain under the winter storm warning until 4pm this afternoon, where an additional 2 to locally 5 inches are possible. Highs today will be near 20 degrees, falling to a low of 9 tonight.

There are still some slick spots on the roads so take extra caution when driving this afternoon. The sun that is shining will help to melt some of that snow on the roads. Enjoy your Wednesday everyone!

More Snow Tonight

Posted by ns62590 on February 26, 2008

While the heaviest snow from the latest winter blast is over, more scattered moderate to light snow is expected overnight. An additional 2 to 4 inches of snow is expected overnight, especially where snowbands persist. Please be careful if you will be outside. Any roads that were wet earlier have the potential to re-freeze tonight with the snow piling up over the potential ice. Use extra caution if you must go outdoors.

Remainder of Storm all Snow

Posted by ns62590 on February 26, 2008

We woke up today to yet another snow day. It seems like we have been home this quarter than in school, but I don’t hear anyone complaining. 3 inches of snow fell overnight, and expect another 2 to 4 this afternoon, with an additional 2 to 4 overnight, for storm totals around 10 inches by Wednesday afternoon.

There was a brief period of freezing rain and sleet this morning, but the low tracked far enough south that the majority of the storm will be snow, thus making this a bigger storm than originally thought last week.

A winter storm warning remains in effect for all of Northeastern Ohio until 4am Wednesday. While most of the roads have been treated this afternoon, there are still some slippery spots and extra caution is needed if you will be venturing out this evening. Stay tuned to WeatherWATCH and local TV news stations for the latest on this winter storm and event cancellations for this evening.

WINTER STORM WARNING!

Posted by ns62590 on February 26, 2008

The purpose of this blog is to add Mahoning and Trumbull Counties into the warning. The winter weather advisory previously in effect has been upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning. Now, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect for all of Northeast Ohio until 4am Wednesday.

The precipitation overnight has been all snow, and temperatures are fairly steady at 29 to 30 degrees. While temperatures may rise a little bit the remainder of the morning, potentially changing the precip to a mix of freezing rain and sleet for a short time, the snow should return quickly. Total storm accumulations across the Youngstown area may be up to 10 inches by Wednesday morning if all snow falls and if some other precip works in, 5 to 7 inches would be the total.

In addition to the snow, gusty winds of 25 to 35mph are expected to develop later this afternoon, possibly creating blizzard conditions at times, as well as drifting snow. Stay safe out there if you will be out this morning or afternoon.

Stay tuned to local TV news media for the latest on this winter storm as well as school closings and cancellations. If you must venture out this morning, give yourself plenty of extra driving time and use caution. If possible, avoid being on the road to allow for snow removal crews and emergency vehicles to occupy the roads. Stay tuned to WeatherWATCH and your favorite weather sources for the latest on this winter storm.

Winter Weather Advisory!

Posted by ns62590 on February 25, 2008

The National Weather Service in Cleveland has issued a winter weather advisory for Mahoning and Stark Counties from 4am Tuesday through 4am Wednesday. A winter storm warning is in effect for Portage and Trumbull counties for the same time.

The storm that I have been predicting for the past week will be arriving tonight and last all day tomorrow and into Wednesday. There are still some minor discrepancies as to the certain precipitation type, but it appears that places in Mahoning and Stark counties will see some plain rain Tuesday morning, while it should stay cold enough across the rest of the area for just snow or freezing rain. Trumbull county can expect up to 8 inches of snow by Wednesday, while Mahoning County can expect about 4 or 5. Still, the storm will start out as a mix of rain and snow, so the morning drive to work and school may be a little sloppy, but more wintry for the drive home.

Stay tuned to NOAA weather radio, WeatherWATCH, and your local TV news media for the latest on yet another winter blast. Use extra caution while driving, and give yourself plenty of time and space. Stay safe and have a good night.

WINTER STORM WATCH

Posted by ns62590 on February 25, 2008

I will send out my normal update later this evening, but I was just adding this post to inform viewers that the National Weather Service has placed our entire area under a Winter Storm Watch for the storm approaching the area. This watch is valid from Tuesday morning through Tuesday evening. This will probably be upgraded this evening, so check back for details. The weather for this afternoon has already shown of the impending storm as clouds have overspread the area.
