The National Weather Service in Cleveland has issued a Winter Storm Warning in effect from 4am through 11pm Tuesday in advance of a snowstorm currently forming over the central Plains states this afternoon. The low pressure system, currently located over the Texas/Oklahoma border will move northeastward overnight tonight and into the early morning hours Tuesday. By daybreak, expect only about an inch or so of snow to be on the ground. However, throughout the day expect the snow to become steadier and heavier, adding up to possibly 6 to 8 inches.
As I have mentioned in my previous blogs, there is the chance for some warm air to filter into the low and change the precip over to rain/freezing rain and/or sleet for a time on Tuesday afternoon. If this does happen, ice accumulations of a quarter inch will be possible. This will make traveling even more difficult than it already may be.
The National Weather Service issues winter storm warnings when severe winter weather is expected. Significant snow and ice accumulations are expected to make travel extremely difficult on Tuesday. If you must venture outdoors tomorrow, give yourself plenty of extra driving time. Try to stay off the roads as much as possible to allow for emergency vehicles and snowplows to occupy the roads. Stay tuned to WeatherWATCH as well as local TV news media and your NOAA weather radios for the latest on this winter weather situation.

It was one year ago this week we were watching the Valentine’s Day Blizzard of 2007 take place. We received over 10 inches of snow, and many schools were closed 2 or 3 days in a row. Now it’s once again Valentine’s Day week and a major winter storm is taking shape across the plains today, ready to slam into our area tonight and Tuesday.
The National Weather Service has issued a WINTER STORM WATCH from late tonight through Tuesday evening for our entire area. As an area of low pressure moves up into the Ohio Valley this evening, expect snow showers to develop any time after 10pm, becoming heavier and steadier by daybreak. Only an inch or so of accumulation is expected overnight. During the day on Tuesday, expect bursts of heavy snow possibly adding up to 6 to 10 inches by Tuesday night.
Now there is one problem: will we see rain and/or freezing rain sometime Tuesday. One of the computer models shows some warm air will get filtered into the storm, changing the precip to rain and freezing rain for a time on Tuesday. If that is the case, the snow amounts will be lower. Since we have a little bit of time to watch this storm take shape, we will have to wait and see where the exact track of the low goes. This will determine the precip type. Stay tuned to Youngstown WeatherWATCH, NOAA Weather Radio, and local TV news stations for the latest on this developing weather situation.

Here in the Mahoning Valley, Mother Nature sure has been kind to us for the ‘07-’08 Winter season. However, when it was cold, it sure has been cold. Overnight tonight expect lows to bottom out near 0 with wind chills near -15. The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Chill Advisory for the entire area in effect until 10AM Monday. If you must venture out, cover all exposed skin and aviod prolonged exposure to the frigid temps to avoid frostbite and hypothermia. Hopefully the schools do the right thing and close so the kids don’t have to freeze out there in the morning. Check your local TV news stations for the latest school closings and cancellations.
Now for the next possibility: a winter storm for Tuesday??? The latest evening runs of the forecast models are coming together for a decent storm, although nothing exciting. Current indications are that about 2 to 5 inches of snow can be possible across the entire area. However, if some warm air comes into the low pressure system, we may see some freezing rain or plain rain Tuesday afternoon, lowering the snow accumulations. We shall see what happens!!!
