Well, it’s almost 7pm, when I forecasted the snow to end, and the rain to begin. The past few hours have given us a coating of ice, and now the temperatures are near freezing and either freezing rain or plain rain is falling. However, don’t expect this to last long. By midnight, colder air will filter in as the low moves away from the area, and the precip will change back to all snow. Accumulations for the overnight hours will only be 1 to locally 3 inches.
Also, a Winter Storm Warning will remain in effect through 11pm tonight. Be careful if you’re planning on venturing out this evening.

Kids and teachers awoke to another day of no school this morning thanks to a winter storm moving through the Ohio Valley. Off and on snow will continue throughout the afternoon hours today, and by 5pm we may in fact have upwards of 8 inches of snow on the ground. A reminder that a winter storm warning remains in effect until 11pm this evening.
Besides the heavy snow, another concern I’m looking out for tonight is the potential for significant ice accumulations. This morning, temperatures were near 14 degrees, but should warm throughout the afternoon, to near 32 or 33 by 7pm. This should change the precip from snow to a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain, and perhaps even plain rain for a short while. The places most likely to see this change will be east of I-71, places such as Akron/Canton, Ashtabula, Warren, Columbiana, and Youngstown. This may create even worse driving conditions, for perhaps a quarter of an inch of ice would be possible. After midnight, however, expect all the precip to change back to snow, although no more than an inch or two additional snowfall would be expected.
A reminder that if you must travel today, give yourself plenty of extra time. However, if you don’t have to be out, stay off the roads to allow for the snow removal crews and emergency vehicles to do their work. Stay tuned to WeatherWATCH, NOAA, and your local TV news stations for the latest on this winter storm.
