Here we go Again

Posted by ns62590 on February 25, 2008

Enjoy today because tonight and tomorrow’s weather will be problematic. We will be dealing with another winter storm, bringing freezing rain, snow, sleet and rain to the Mahoning Valley. Before I get to the details as of the morning model runs, I will remind you that today’s weather will be very pleasant for the end of February. Partly cloudy skies early will transition to mostly cloudy this afternoon and evening as the storm moves in. Temperatures will be near 40 degrees.

Morning runs of the models are becoming more favorable for snow lovers, worse for those who hate winter weather. At first it appeared that the storm would be all rain, but now expect snow too. This forecast may have to be modified later today if the models remain consistent on this formula. Right now, I am going to go with a mix of rain, snow, and even a chance of freezing rain overnight, then transitioning to all rain Tuesday morning, before going back over to snow Tuesday afternoon. 2 to 3 inches of snow is possible. However, for places along Lake Erie 4 to 9 inches are possible, and the National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for these areas. It should be noted, however, there are no winter weather alerts in effect for the Youngstown area……..yet.

Stay tuned for my afternoon update around 6pm this evening as I check the models again. Until then, enjoy the afternoon and take advantage of the nice temperatures for one more day.

Another Storm on the Way

Posted by ns62590 on February 24, 2008

Well, our nice days are just about over. Of course anyone who has lived in Northeastern Ohio for a long time, nice days are numbered. Monday will still be the nicest of all the days because we will see temperatures in the low 40s, but as we go through the day we will see more clouds as the next system will be working into our area from the Midwest.

The next storm for Monday night and Tuesday remains tricky to forecast. As it appears from the latest Sunday models, we will see a wide variety of precipitation falling…..again! The precip should begin as a period of rain Monday night. Then as temperatures fall overnight Monday into Tuesday, expect the rain to change to a mix of rain, snow, and freezing rain, changing back to all rain Tuesday mid-morning. Thereafter, Tuesday afternoon when the low passes us with a change in wind direction, the precip will change back to all snow, tapering to snow showers Tuesday night and Wednesday.

While this forecast will have to be monitored to be updated as we get closer to the event. In the meantime, enjoy the weather this Sunday night and the day tomorrow. Stay tuned to WeatherWATCH and your local TV news stations for the latest on this potential storm.

Enjoy this Weather

Posted by ns62590 on February 23, 2008

It has been a long time since the forecast has been sunny for 3 days in a row. However, expect to see the sun today, tomorrow, and even into Monday as high pressure will hold firm control over the area. Highs today will be near 30, and tonight under clear skies the temperatures will plummet to around 10. They will rebound into the upper 30s on Sunday, and Monday even into the lower 40s. Please take time to enjoy this beautiful weather.

I’m not going to spoil the fun of the nice weather mentioning the storm for Monday and Tuesday, so I will hold off mentioning that until tomorrow. Have a great weekend everybody!!!

Much Nicer Weekend!

Posted by ns62590 on February 22, 2008

The National Weather Service cancelled our advisory a little early this evening. A few flurries or light snow showers will be possible overnight, but only adding up to an inch or less.

This weekend looks beautiful. Look for sunny skies and temperatures in the 30s. The next storm will be coming Monday night and Tuesday. Look to my previous blog for more on this. Have a good night and a good weekend everyone!

Advisory Extended as New Storm Brews

Posted by ns62590 on February 22, 2008

We had our fair share of snow today, but unfortunately for all you snow-haters out there, there is more snow on the way tonight. The winter weather advisory has been extended until 4am Saturday morning as more snow and possible mixed precipitation will work it’s way through. This precip is located over Indiana and Western Ohio late this afternoon. Only expect an additional 1 to 3 inches, but that will be enough to make everything out there slick again, so if you will be venturing out this evening, use extra caution.

The weekend looks great, even into Monday with the sun returning and temperatures in the 30s. Monday night and Tuesday is a different story.

Models are coming into agreement that the low pressure area, currently centered over the open waters of the Pacific Ocean near Hawaii will slam ashore California tomorrow and then make its way across the country. It will move over the eastern part of the country Monday and into Tuesday. There is some good news though with this storm, it appears that the temperatures will be warm enough Tuesday for all rain in the afternoon. Monday night and Tuesday night, with the cooler temperatures will be tricky determining the type of precip that falls: whether it is snow, rain and snow, freezing rain, or sleet. This will have to be determined as we get closer to the time.

For now, stay safe tonight. I saw an accident on the Madison Ave. Expressway this afternoon, so things are slippery out there still, especially if we get some more snow this evening. Enjoy the start of your weekend!

Storm Update

Posted by ns62590 on February 22, 2008

Well, our storm did bring us a couple inches of snow overnight. There has been a lull in the action this morning, but later this afternoon the precipitation will begin again. It may be warm enough that we will see some sleet and/or freezing rain, but any ice accumulations will be less than a tenth of an inch.  After sunset, all precip will change back to all snow with an additional 1 to 2 inches possible.

The way to school was a little messy this morning, and the roads may still be slippery and snow-covered. Use extra caution this afternoon and allow some extra time to reach your destination. Also, a winter weather advisory remains in effect until 7pm for all the non-lakeshore counties of Northeastern Ohio. Stay safe everyone!!!

Winter Weather Advisory in Effect

Posted by ns62590 on February 21, 2008

The National Weather Service in Cleveland has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the non-lakeshore counties of Trumbull, Portage, Summit, Stark, and Mahoning from 7pm this evening through 7pm Friday.

All the models agree on tonight and tomorrow’s situation to an extent, so the forecast is fairly confident. Snow should begin spreading into the area later this evening and become heavier and steadier through the overnight hours. 2 to as much as 4 inches of snow may be on the ground by Friday morning. Another inch is possible Friday before the precip changes to a mix of sleet and freezing rain Friday late morning and afternoon. Once temperatures lower again Friday evening, the transition to all snow will take place, but the heaviest precipitation will be over. Ice accumulations are expected to only be a tenth of an inch or so.

This is not expected to be a huge storm, but it is expected to bring travel difficulties and be a problem for motorists. Use extra caution and allow for some extra time when driving in the morning. While severe winter weather is not expected, be alert for rapidly changing weather conditions and monitor the latest forecasts.

Stay tuned to WeatherWATCH, your local TV and news media, your NOAA Weather Radios and radio stations for the latest updates and information on this latest round of winter weather.

Storm on the Way!

Posted by ns62590 on February 21, 2008

Today will be much different than tomorrow. Skies are sunny and temperatures are not that cold. Temperatures will be in the mid 20s under partly cloudy skies for the remainder of the afternoon. This evening, expect to see more clouds build in as the storm system that will affect us tomorrow will be coming closer.

An area of low pressure is currently centered over Oklahoma and Texas is combining with a frontal system centered over the Southeastern U.S. to create a large area of rain across the Gulf Coast, ice across the Mississippi Valley, and snow across the lower Ohio Valley. This snow will spread towards Ohio and the Northeastern U.S. tomorrow. Expect the snow to develop after midnight, with 1 to 2 inches of snow by daybreak Friday. Another 1 to 3 inches are expected Friday morning into the afternoon. There is the chance for a changeover to sleet/freezing rain a little bit during the afternoon on Friday, but the precip will change back to snow Friday night into Saturday morning before the snow tapers off. By Saturday morning, total accumulations for the storm are expected to be near 3 to 5 inches.

Stay tuned for the latest on this developing weather situation. Other than that, have a good day and enjoy the sunshine today!!!

Storm for Friday

Posted by ns62590 on February 20, 2008

Well, finally the models are coming into agreement on the storm system for Friday. But before we get to that, a quick overview for tonight and Thursday.

Tonight will be a very cold night. Temperatures will fall into the single digits with wind chills around 0 or 2 below. Thursday looks beautiful with highs near 25 degrees under partly cloudy skies.

Thursday night, we will begin to see the onslaught of the next winter storm to work its way through the area. The storm system will spread a large area of ice and snow across the plains states on Thursday afternoon, then work up into our region Thursday night and Friday. At this time, it doesn’t appear to be a huge storm, but a moderate snowfall is expected.

The snow is expected to begin after 1am Friday morning. Don’t expect more than an inch or so by morning. Friday will bring with it off and on snow, some of it heavy at times. At this time, it appears that total storm accumulations will range from 3 to 5 inches. Still, we have a day or so to watch this, for if more moisture works into the storm, the totals may have to be raised, or if warm air is expected to move in, we may see some sleet or freezing rain at times. But as it seems tonight, we should mainly stay all snow.

Stay warm out there if you are venturing out this evening!

Watching and Waiting

Posted by ns62590 on February 20, 2008

After all the fun we had last week with our winter storm, I’m ready for another one. However, I think I will be waiting for awhile until that happens. So, the closest thing I’ll get is a decent snowmaker poised to affect our area on Friday.

The computer models I think are on drugs this week, because they still are not agreeing on the timing of the storm. So the only thing I can say right now is what I’ve been saying now all week: there is the potential for a decent amount of snow Thursday night and Friday. At this time, it appears that 3 to 5 inches will be possible during this time frame, but I do not want to make any certain specifications at this time. Hopefully this afternoon, the models will come into better agreement on the storm. One thing is almost certain, however, that the majority of the precipitation will be all snow.

As for today, not a lot to talk about besides the temperatures. Highs today are only going to top out around 21 degrees. Tonight, lows will be near 7 degrees. Wind chills won’t be a huge problem, perhaps around 0 through 5 below. Any snow showers will be light and only add up to an inch or less.
