Dry Pattern Ahead

Posted by ns62590 on July 31, 2008

The next several days will feature low rain chances, but increased chances of heat and sunshine!!! Temperatures tomorrow will be the coolest they’ll be in the next week, and that’s in the mid 80s. The weekend and beginning of next week will all have temperatures in the upper 80s and low 90s. We will run the risk of that ‘pop-up’ shower or storm since it will be so warm and humid, but look for overall dry conditions and summertime temperatures. The dog-days are here….and less than 150 days until Christmas (I just had to ruin it for you all) sorry! Have a good day everyone!

Different Week

Posted by ns62590 on July 29, 2008

Last week at this time, we were watching Dolly grow in strength. This week the tropical Atlantic is quiet and void of any threats of development in the near term. The only thing worth mentioning is a tropical wave located in the far eastern Atlantic right off the west coast of Africa south-southeast of the Cape Verde islands. While there is not much in the way of thunderstorm activity associated with the wave, it has a chance to slowly develop over the next week. It is still 6 to 7 days from affecting any land areas if it holds together. Other than this, your plans for vacation in the tropics will be hurricane free!!!

Warm Tuesday

Posted by ns62590 on July 28, 2008

Your Tuesday will feature temperatures around 85 degrees with partly cloudy skies. We run the chance for an isolated shower or storm to pop up in the afternoon, as is the case of most summer afternoons.  Enjoy your Tuesday, because showers and thunderstorms will be more widespread on Wednesday.

Tranquil Tropics

Posted by ns62590 on July 27, 2008

Just like the weather in Ohio this afternoon, the tropics are quiet after such a long July. Bertha started us off on the 3rd and we continued right through the month with Cristobal and ended with Dolly making landfall last Wednesday.

Currently in the Atlantic Basin, as of Sunday morning there was just one tropical wave that is in an environment unfavorable for development. Looking at a satellite of Africa this morning, there were a couple low pressure systems that will be exiting the coast this week so we will monitor those disturbances as that is where a lot of tropical weather forms this time of year. Keep it here for the latest, but as of today – there are no worries for your vacations to Bermuda, Puerto Rico, or Barbados. Enjoy it!

Decent Weekend Setting Up

Posted by ns62590 on July 25, 2008

After a beautiful Friday your Saturday and Sunday should be fairly pleasant. We might see a few rain showers and thunderstorms Saturday afternoon and evening, but all in all as a whole – this weekend will be great. Sunday will be a little cooler than Saturday. Overall temperatures will be in the 80s both days however. For your Friday evening, expect partly cloudy skies and perfect temperatures. After Saturday’s rain chances – the next several days look great! Have a great one Youngstown!!!

Dolly Makes Landfall

Posted by ns62590 on July 23, 2008

Hurricane Dolly (100 mph) is making landfall as of 2pm Eastern time as a category 2 hurricane. The center is onshore just near South Padre Island, TX and about 35 miles Northeast of Brownsville, TX. Some minor damage has been reported across south Texas and a huge threat will be heavy rain and flooding because the hurricane is moving so slow at about 7mph. These totals could be over 10 to 12 inches of rain across southern Texas. Wind gusts to 60 and 70 mph have been reported in Brownsville and I’m sure there are higher gusts where the actual eye is onshore, that haven’t been reported yet.

For the latest on Hurricane Dolly, The Weather Channel is having all day coverage on the hurricane and you can log on to the website of the National Hurricane Center at www.nhc.noaa.gov- the link is available on my blogroll.

Dolly has become a hurricane and is bearing down on Southern Texas. The storm, with maximum sustained winds of 75mph as of 8pm is in the process of strengthening as recorded by the NOAA plane investigating the storm. A hurricane warning is in effect for southern Texas. Those in the warned area should expect tropical storm conditions overnight with hurricane conditions tomorrow morning. Waves and surf will be high so no one is allowed in the water.

Much Nicer

Posted by ns62590 on July 22, 2008

After a week full of heat and humidity, your Tuesday looks to be much nicer as temperatures will only top out around 79 degrees with much less humidity. We will run about a 40 percent chance of a passing shower or storm but no wash out is anticipated. Enjoy the nice weather. Over the next 7 days the highest temperature in the forecast is 84 so it should be pleasant.

Dolly to Become First Oil Threat Storm

Posted by ns62590 on July 21, 2008

Late last night into early this morning Tropical Storm Dolly made her first landfall in the northern Yucatan, south of Cancun. Since then, it has quickly tracked over the southern Gulf of Mexico and now as of 8pm Monday, the center was located about 405 miles east-southeast of Brownsville, Texas with winds of 50mph. However, the storm is getting better organized and is expected to strengthen into a hurricane tomorrow. A hurricane watch is in effect for south Texas and northern Mexico. According to the National Hurricane Center, these watches will probably become hurricane warnings at the next advisory.

While Dolly will stay far enough south to keep away from a large number of the oil wells in the Gulf, large waves may cut oil production for a time over the next two days. Now, of course the effects of this will not be as bad as was with hurricanes Rita and Katrina in 2005, but it was worth mentioning.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Cristobal has strengthened as it moves away from the outer banks of North Carolina. Not much harm was done from this storm, and that’s a good thing. For the latest on Dolly, keep it here and to the National Hurricane Center.
