More of the Same

Posted by ns62590 on November 19, 2008

We sure have had our fair share of wintry weather this week so far, and it will continue tonight and Wednesday. While we will see some flurries Wednesday afternoon, we could see some heavier snow tonight. Another clipper will move through tomorrow night and shift the winds around for some more snow Thursday. However, the major story will be the cold. Highs will be in the 30s the rest of the week. These highs are 10 to 15 degrees below normal for this time of year.

More Lake Effect Snow

Posted by ns62590 on November 18, 2008

Today was a very interesting day. Here in Austintown we picked up a little more than an inch, but it sure did come down heavy and caused lots of travel problems for morning and afternoon rush. Numerous accidents were reported across the area today. Tomorrow morning may bring much of the same. So please be careful driving out there, take extra time – especially on I-680 and areas around downtown Youngstown. The lake effect snow machine will turn off mid-week, but the cold weather will remain – and so will the chance of snow for the rest of the week as a clipper storm system will make its way through the area on Thursday. Tuesday’s highs will be near 33 degrees. Stay warm and safe!

Looking Like Winter

Posted by ns62590 on November 16, 2008

We have been spoiled with relatively nice weather this month, and this weekend will foreshadow this coming week ahead. We will see off and on snow flurries throughout the week. While we will not see any major accumulations, an inch or so at times is possible any time during the week. Temperatures will not even make it out of the 30s this week for highs, and will be in the 20s for the overnight periods. Now it really looks like the holiday season is upon us.  Have a great Monday and be careful driving this week!

Nasty Weekend

Posted by ns62590 on November 15, 2008

This weekend will certainly not be what your Friday was, as we will see off and on rain through Saturday, with that precipitation changing to all snow overnight and through Sunday and Monday. We actually may see a few inches of snow by the time it winds down Tuesday. The snow won’t be heavy, but it will cause slippery conditions, so since this is the first “real” snowfall this year, use extra caution when driving late Saturday and into next week. For your Saturday, with the rain will come falling temperatures. As of 8am the temperature was 52 degrees, and that will only get cooler as the day progresses.

Today and tomorrow will be perfect days for heading to Austintown for the 2008 Model Train Open House! The Youngstown Model Railroad Association is sponsoring an open house with two huge model train displays. The club is located on the corner of 4-Mile Run and Raccoon Roads in Austintown. A $3 donation is taken at the door while children under the age of 12 are admitted free. The trains will be running from noon until 6pm both Saturday and Sunday this weekend (Nov 15 & 16)!

Lots of Rain

Posted by ns62590 on November 13, 2008

We will be inundated with heavy rain overnight into Thursday morning, with the chance continuing into the afternoon. Lows tonight will be around 43 degrees, and temperatures will warm to about 54 tomorrow. Look for a dramatic cool-down next week and we may actually see accumulating snow; not much, but a little bit is possible. Have a great Thursday!

Warm but Wet

Posted by ns62590 on November 11, 2008

After a few days of temperatures in the 30s and 40s, we will warm to about 55 degrees tomorrow. But with the warmth comes the chance of rain, mainly later in the day. The warmth won’t last long as temperatures will be back in the 40s this weekend, with the chance of rain and snow.

All Quiet..in the Tropics

Posted by ns62590 on November 10, 2008

Hurricane Paloma is now just a swirl of low clouds over Cuba, but it sure did it’s damage this weekend. Now, the tropical Atlantic Ocean is quiet again (typical for November), and no threats for tropical cyclone formation is expected over the next few days. However, for us here in Youngstown, we will have some unsettled weather over the next few days. Overnight, we will see some snow showers, but only adding to a half inch or less. We will see temperatures dip to around 30, and only get to about 41 tomorrow. We will have a slight moderation later this week before temperatures dip again late in the week. This is truly November weather! Have a good Monday!

Dangerous Paloma Onshore in Cuba

Posted by ns62590 on November 8, 2008

Hurricane Paloma, once a category four storm with winds topped to near 145 mph this afternoon, made landfall around 6:20pm this evening as a Category 3 storm as winds dropped to near 125 when the storm came ashore near Santa Cruz Del Sur Cuba. As of 7pm, winds are near 120mph. Continued weakening is expected tonight, but dangerous winds and drenching, flooding rains are expected to bring mudslides and flooding to the areas already suffering from Hurricanes Gustav and Ike this year.

Paloma Rapidly Becomes Cat 4

Posted by ns62590 on November 8, 2008

Hurricane Paloma has intensified vigorously overnight, and as of 7am Eastern Time, was located over the Cayman Islands. Winds near the eye are around 140 mph, and the minimum pressure is 939 millibars, found by the NOAA Hurricane Hunters. Hurricane Paloma is the strongest November hurricane since Hurricane Lenny in 1999. Locations in the Cayman Islands have reported winds over 100 mph, but thankfully those winds are confined to a very small core around the eye. Paloma, while maybe stronger this morning, will weaken late today as a trough digs in to the storm’s center. However, it is expected to be a major hurricane when it strikes Cuba tonight. Any measures to protect life and property from this dangerous storm should be done or just about done. This is a very destructive storm, and can do extreme damage.

Strengthening Paloma headed for Caymans and Cuba

Posted by ns62590 on November 7, 2008

Hurricane Paloma is now, as of 10pm, a category 3 hurricane with winds of 115 mph and a pressure of 962 millibars. Hurricane warnings are now in effect for the Cayman Islands and portions of Cuba, where tropical storm warnings are also in effect on the ends of the hurricane warnings. Persons in these towns and areas are urged to monitor the latest forecasts, as Paloma is a major hurricane and should remain so for about 12 more hours. However, once the center of the storm goes over Cuba, it will weaken then eventually be sheared to a remnant low as it heads over the Bahamas.
