<description>Thank you for covering the weather so accurately. It is a great service that you are providing. When considering the weather and Hurricane Ike, it occurred to me that there will be those who are in potential hurricane danger who think that ‘what happened in Cuba won’t happen to us’.

My concern is that we will not know for several days where hurricane Ike will come ashore. There is only a small window of opportunity to call for an emergency evacuation should it be necessary. Many in the Western section of the Gulf coast of the US are not as frequented in very recent years by hurricanes as say parts of Florida and Cuba although certainly hurricanes of significant strength have caused catastrophic damage and loss of life over history. Because of hurricane fatigue and uncertainty there are many who are woefully under hurricane prepared should Hurricane Ike hit their community. The more time Hurricane Ike is located in the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, the higher the chance that the intensity of the storm will increase.

We have now seen what happened in Turk and Cuba for example with the sever intensity of Hurricane Ike. This pending hurricane disaster will in all likelihood hit the shores of the Gulf Cost in due time. It is important that individuals, households and businesses both large and small take steps now with sound and effective hurricane preparedness measures to safeguard life and property. The sooner one prepares for a hurricane disaster, the better the chances of effective meeting the challenges that face individuals and communities when a hurricanes strikes.

Cuba is an example of this. Even though their infrastructure is significantly challenged due to structural maintenance issues, it is notable to see that so few deaths took place. Currently approximately 10% of US residents in the major hurricane impact area select to shelter-in-place during this year’s hurricane events. This is significantly less than what were experienced in the past, yet it is still a substantial portion of the population at grave risk.

With the economy as it is, many are on tighter budgets &amp; pass up purchasing necessary disaster supplies. Others won’t have money to respond to an emergency evacuation order &amp; will shelter-in-place or make a mad dash for a local emergency shelter at the last minute. Last minute emergency evacuation plans either at home or at an emergency shelter are often the most poorly developed when it comes to hurricane preparedness.

Emergency preparedness is a must-do activity long before hurricane season &amp; certainly way before a hurricane arrives. NOW is the time to plan. We have not even reached the peak of hurricane season yet, so take the time to prepare. We have been given a great gift of a window of opportunity to be hurricane prepare. The cost for not being hurricane prepared can be extremely costly even deadly.

Having an emergency preparedness checklist and a disaster kit, a person’s emergency response actions have a much greater chance of success. The person &amp; their family are much better prepared to endure the hurricane storm physically, emotionally and financially when adequately prepared. Those who are hurricane prepared are generally better able to start any hurricane recovery strategy quickly and effectively should they sustain damage or loss.

We have two choices, we can become hurricane prepared and avoid as much as possible the destructive results of Hurricane Ike or experience the pain and anguish of destructive loss of life and property by not getting ready for the torrential rain and wind of a dangerous hurricane.
